As you get ready to go on that long-overdue vacation, you may want to take a few minutes and look at what is and what is not covered when it comes to baggage insurance.

Some premium travel credit cards will automatically cover your baggage as a perk for using their card to make your travel arrangements. You can also purchase baggage insurance as part of your travel insurance as well.

There are two types of baggage insurance, baggage loss, and baggage delay, according to NerdWallet.

Just as the title implies, Delay Baggage insurance gives you the opportunity to purchase necessary items while you wait for your bags to come.

With this type of insurance, the payout has two limits. One-a-day limit and two-per-person limit.

This policy usually has a specified amount of time that must pass before you can file a claim.

The other type is known as Baggage Loss, and as the name suggests, is when your bags are lost or stolen while you are traveling.

This kind of policy usually has three limitations: per item limits, specific limits for high-end items, and a per-person overall limit.

Also, these policies are considered secondary policies as most travel carriers also have policies that can cover you if you should ever need to file a claim.

If you lose any valuable items, you may also want to check your homeowners’ policy as sometimes they can help cover the amount that you lose at no fault of your own.
