Here are a few tips to help you stay on track financially, according to TransUnion, a credit consumer reporting agency:
- Make a list of your personal and family income and savings.
- Make a full list of your essential expenses, including rent or mortgage, household bills like water, power, and trash; credit card bills, groceries, insurance, etc.
- In your list of expenses, make a sublist of nonessentials. These include items like subscriptions to stream services or magazines, fast food, or even those Starbucks trips.
- Put your expenses into categories like entertainment, food/groceries, home, etc.
- Total how much money is spent in each of the categories.
- Look at how you can make savings in the nonessential categories, which you can then put into savings or paying off debts. Maybe it’s Starbucks once a week instead of five days or eating out less.
- Assign a monthly budget towards each of the categories and stick to it.
- Don’t stop yourself from having some occasional treats and fun things to do each month.
- Review your budget regularly.
